The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has announced that the House Constitution Review Committee will begin public hearings across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones in July as part of efforts to engage citizens in the ongoing constitutional amendment process.
Kalu, who also chairs the House Committee on Constitutional Review, disclosed this during a joint session of consultants and the secretariats of the House and Senate Constitution Review Committees in Abuja on Friday.
He explained that the public hearings would be conducted in two phases, beginning with the northern zones—North Central, North West, and North East—from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13, 2025, followed by the southern zones—South South, South East, and South West—from Friday, July 18 to Sunday, July 20, 2025.
According to the schedule, in the North Central zone, Kogi, Kwara, and Niger States will converge at the Minna center, while Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue States, and the Federal Capital Territory will hold their session at the Lafia center.
In the North West, Kaduna will serve as the meeting point for stakeholders from Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina States, while Sokoto will host those from Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi States. In the North East, Gombe will be the center for Gombe, Bauchi, and Taraba States, while Maiduguri will cater to Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States.
For the southern zones, Bayelsa, Edo, and Delta States will meet at the Yenagoa center, while Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom States will convene in Calabar. In the South East, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu States will gather in Enugu, while Imo and Abia States will meet in Owerri. For the South West, Lagos will host stakeholders from Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo States, while Akure will serve as the center for Ondo, Osun, and Ekiti States.
Kalu emphasized that the hearings are designed to ensure inclusivity and provide citizens the opportunity to express their views on constitutional reforms that directly affect them. He noted that the committee is prioritizing amendment bills that address critical national concerns such as gender equality, inclusive governance, security and police reforms, fiscal federalism, judicial reforms, and devolution of powers.
He described the current constitutional review process as one of the most far-reaching in Nigeria’s democratic history, aimed at addressing fundamental governance and structural challenges through well-considered amendments shaped by the collective voice of the people.
