World Press Freedom Day: Honoring Nigerian Media’s Crucial Role in Climate Education- Reps

On May 3rd, the House of Representatives joins the global community in commemorating World Press Freedom Day, recognizing the vital role of a free media in healthy democracies. This year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis,” highlights the critical contribution of journalists in raising awareness about climate change and its devastating impacts.

In Nigeria, ranked among the most vulnerable countries to climate change, the media plays a crucial role in educating the public about the causes and consequences of environmental issues such as flooding, drought, food insecurity, and conflicts. The House of Representatives acknowledges the Nigerian media as a vibrant institution and commits to engaging with them to review laws and practices that restrict press freedom and hinder their constitutional role.

As part of our Legislative Agenda (2023-2027), we are enhancing good governance practices, transparency, and accountability through media chats, public hearings, and town halls. We urge journalists and media practitioners to uphold responsible, independent, and fact-based journalism, protecting our democracy and promoting a healthy and democratic media environment.

On this World Press Freedom Day, we celebrate and honor the work of every journalist and media practitioner in Nigeria, recognizing their significant role in climate education and their duty to uphold the fundamental objectives contained in the constitution.
