Update: Army Frees Delta Monarch Linked to Okuama Killing


The Nigerian Army announced the release of Prince Clement Ikolo Ogenerukevwe, the monarch of Ewu Kingdom, who was previously sought in connection with the deaths of 17 military personnel in Okuama, Delta State.

Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, confirmed the release, stating that while no one has been cleared of involvement in the incident, the decision to release the monarch came after influential individuals intervened and a thorough review of the case.

Previously, the military had launched a manhunt for suspects, naming several individuals, including the monarch, as wanted.

HRH Clement Ikolo Ogenerukevwe voluntarily surrendered to the police, who subsequently handed him over to the military for questioning.He had been in custody until his release.

The Army, after reviewing available information and considering the testimony of Senator Ede Dafinonel regarding the monarch’s character, found insufficient evidence to implicate him conclusively.

Therefore, he was released on bail to the senator, who acted as surety under the condition of continued cooperation with investigations.

The Army reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and justice, urging other wanted individuals to cooperate with investigations

. They assured fair treatment and adherence to constitutional provisions for handling such cases.

Prince Clement Ikolo Ogenerukevwe expressed gratitude for the fair treatment during his detention and pledged cooperation with authorities to apprehend those responsible for the tragedy.

Senator Ede Dafinonel praised the army’s professionalism in managing the situation and affirmed that the monarch was treated respectfully throughout the process.
