Troops Secure Release of Two Hostages Abducted from National Eye Centre, Kaduna

In a significant breakthrough, the Nigerian military has announced the release of Dr. Ganiya Nurudeen Popoola and a teenage boy, Folaranmi Abdul Mughiy, who were abducted from the National Eye Centre in Kaduna last year.

The duo, along with Dr. Popoola’s husband, Squadron Leader Nurudeen Abiodun Popoola, were kidnapped from their residence in the Doctors’ Quarters on September 27, 2023. Squadron Leader Popoola was previously rescued on March 8, 2024, through military operations.

According to a statement from Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, troops successfully secured the release of Dr. Popoola and young Folaranmi on October 30, 2024, at approximately 5:00 pm.

This success was achieved through non-kinetic measures, emphasizing the military’s ongoing strategy of combining both combat and diplomatic efforts in tackling insurgency in the North Central region.

Although specific details surrounding the release remain classified due to ongoing operations, the development highlights the apparent willingness of certain terrorist factions and leaders to engage with the authorities, potentially opening the door for further surrenders.

The military noted that similar situations are occurring in the North East, where a number of combatants have laid down their arms.

As Nigeria continues its fight against insurgency, the Defence Media Operations Directorate emphasized that cooperation from all sectors of society is vital to achieving lasting peace.

Meanwhile, the military reiterated its commitment to pursuing those who refuse to surrender, giving terrorists a “window of opportunity to surrender or be killed on the battlefield.”

Further details on the recent hostages’ release are expected to follow as the military assesses the situation and continues its efforts to combat insecurity in the region.
