Troops under Operation DELTA SAFE have recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against oil theft and economic sabotage, intercepting illegal crude and petroleum products valued at over N1.93 billion within a week.
The Director Defence Media Operations Major General Markus Kangye who stated this while addressing newsmen in Abuja highlighted the achievements of the Nigerian military’s various operations across the country in its continued effort to ensure national security.
The director explained that the troops seized 1,009,733 litres of stolen crude oil, 304,811 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), 3,480 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK), 19,875 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), and 1,600 litres of engine oil. In the process, security forces destroyed 95 illegal refining sites, 351 crude oil cooking ovens, 418 dugout pits, 160 storage tanks, and confiscated 30 boats, 9 speedboats, 721 drums, and 42 vehicles, among other equipment.
The military high command praised the professionalism and bravery of the troops, emphasizing the strategic importance of Operation DELTA SAFE in curbing oil-related crimes in the Niger Delta. “Our dedicated troops have demonstrated remarkable courage and professionalism in the face of adversity,” the statement noted.
Beyond the Niger Delta, the military reported significant gains in other operations. In the past month, over 430 suspects involved in terrorism, kidnapping, and oil theft were apprehended.
Among those captured was Nkwachi Eze, a notorious insurgent leader in the South East, and Buhari Umar, a suspected arms dealer and kidnapping kingpin operating in the North Central region.
Operation WHIRL STROKE also recorded success with the arrest of a five-man kidnapping syndicate in Lafia, Nasarawa State. Additionally, 173 kidnapped victims were rescued, while over 204 terrorists and their families surrendered to troops across various theatres.
General Kangye reaffirmed the military’s commitment to its constitutional mandate, expressing gratitude to both local communities and media organizations for their cooperation and support.
He also emphasized the importance of collaboration with both local and international partners in enhancing intelligence sharing and operational efficiency.
