The House of Representatives is set to commence a two-day retreat on Tuesday 30th April, focused on major economic laws, policies, and programs of the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. The retreat, themed “Economic Transformation & Development: Towards Effective Implementation of the Petroleum Industry Reform Act (2021) and Tax Reforms/Modernisation,” aims to navigate change and develop legislative strategies for economic transformation.
President Tinubu will declare the retreat open at the Abuja Continental Hotel, while Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike will host the event. Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, will be the chief host, accompanied by President of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, and other dignitaries.
The retreat features a lineup of experts, including Mele Kolo Kyari (Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPCL), Zacch Adedeji (Executive Chairman, FIRS), and Taiwo Oyedele (Chairman, Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms). The objectives of the retreat include understanding the Petroleum Industry Act, exploring legislative oversight and implementation, stakeholder engagement, policy and regulatory framework, driving tax reforms, fostering collaboration, and promoting accountability.
The expected outcomes of the retreat include enhanced understanding of the Petroleum Industry Act, a clear roadmap for legislative and oversight roles, strengthened collaboration, recommendations for policy adjustments, capacity building, and deeper insights into economic development and tax reforms. The retreat aims to improve the capacity for effective oversight of government economic policies and public financial practices, ensuring alignment with national development goals.
