Speaker Withdraws Compulsory Voting Bill

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., GCON, has withdrawn the Bill to Amend the Electoral Act 2022 to make voting mandatory for all eligible Nigerians. The bill, which he co-sponsored with Hon. Daniel Adama Ago, aimed to increase civic engagement and strengthen democracy by encouraging higher voter turnout.

The Speaker noted that compulsory voting has been successfully implemented in countries like Australia, Belgium, and Brazil, where it has helped sustain high participation rates. However, after extensive consultations with stakeholders, he decided to withdraw the bill, acknowledging that lawmaking should prioritize the people it serves and respect individual freedoms and public sentiment.

Rather than compelling participation, the Speaker is committed to exploring positive incentives and innovative approaches to make voting more attractive and accessible to all Nigerians. This decision will allow for further dialogue on cultivating a culture of voluntary participation that honors democratic ideals and citizens’ rights.

The Speaker’s decision to withdraw the bill demonstrates his commitment to prioritizing citizens’ rights and freedoms. By doing so, he is ensuring that any reform respects the will of the people and promotes a more inclusive and participatory democracy.

The withdrawal of the bill will allow for a renewed focus on finding alternative solutions to increase voter turnout and promote civic engagement. The Speaker’s office is expected to engage in further consultations and discussions to identify innovative approaches that will encourage Nigerians to participate in the electoral process voluntarily.
