Speaker Abbas Urges Surveyors to Develop Framework to Tackle Insecurity and Boundary Disputes

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D, has called on the Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS) to develop a strategic framework to help tackle insurgency, terrorism, and other insecurity challenges facing the country. He emphasized the importance of proper mapping to enhance the operational efficiency of security agencies.

Represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Speaker Abbas commended the institution for its contributions to economic development and conflict resolution. He highlighted the significance of surveyors in resolving land disputes, which are often a source of conflicts and insecurity.

The Speaker urged the institution to play a more active role in finding lasting solutions to boundary conflicts and developing a strategic framework to help tackle security challenges. He emphasized the need for accurate mapping to enhance the operational efficiency of security agencies and prevent misguided interventions.

Speaker Abbas also expressed regret that the institution was not consulted during the final decisions on the Bakassi Peninsula, emphasizing the importance of seeking expert opinions in such matters. He assured that the parliament will strengthen the institution for more positive results.

Earlier, the President of the institution, Dr. Mathew Ibitoye, called for the review of existing statutory legislations regarding surveying and geoinformatics. He also appealed for adequate funding of relevant regulatory agencies in the sector.
