In a momentous end-of-year address on Saturday, December 30, 2023, the Right Honourable Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed gratitude and pride for the collective accomplishments of the House since its inauguration on June 13, 2023.
The Speaker began by acknowledging the unfortunate loss of some members, including Hon. Abdulkadir Danbuga, Ismaila Maihanci, Mojisola Ayobami, His Royal Highness Dr. Benjamin Fezan Wombo, and the recently deceased Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Na’Abba, paying respects with a minute of silence.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by the nation, Speaker Tajudeen praised the House’s responsiveness and commitment to ameliorating the suffering of constituents. He highlighted the House’s role in crucial matters such as peace and security, social welfare, healthcare, education, infrastructure development, economic growth, and more, achieved through robust debates and bipartisan collaboration.
The Speaker commended the unity of purpose among House members, thanking them for their dedication, exemplary conduct, and sacrifices, including working on weekends and public holidays. He emphasized the transparent and inclusive leadership model adopted for better public trust and accountability.
The address outlined legislative landmarks achieved in the last six months, including the rationalization of committee mandates, updates to Standing Orders for technological advancements, and the presentation of a comprehensive Legislative Agenda focused on governance, security, economic growth, social sector reform, and more.
Notable legislative outputs featured in the address include the passage of key bills such as the Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, Federal Fire and Rescue Service Bill, and the South East Development Commission (Establishment) Bill. The House has also received and resolved over 500 motions and 153 petitions, showcasing its commitment to addressing pressing issues affecting the people.
Speaker Tajudeen emphasized citizen engagement, with town halls held on electoral reforms and the 2024 Appropriation Bill. He highlighted the House’s efforts in sectoral debates and briefings to enhance understanding of challenges faced by various sectors.
Expressing condolences for recent security setbacks and tragedies, the Speaker pledged the House’s continued support for the government’s fight against insurgency and criminality.
In closing, Speaker Abbas Tajudeen acknowledged the contributions of development partners, donor agencies, and civil society organizations to the House’s success. He thanked all members for their service and wished for a joyous holiday season, expressing hope and success for the upcoming year.
