The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, PhD, GCON, has reaffirmed the significance of the South East Development Commission (SEDC) in fostering infrastructure development, economic revitalization, and social progress in the Southeast region.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the House Committee on SEDC at the National Assembly complex, Abuja, Speaker Abbas, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, emphasized that the Commission was created to address the region’s long-standing challenges, including gully erosion, infrastructural decay, economic downturn, youth unemployment, and insecurity.
“Today’s inauguration is not just a formality. It is the beginning of a renewed effort to unlock the full potential of the South East, a region known for its resilience, industry, and entrepreneurial spirit,” he stated.
He noted that despite the region’s rich human capital and contributions to the national economy, it has suffered from inadequate infrastructure, limited federal presence, and developmental setbacks.
The establishment of the SEDC, he said, is a strategic response to these issues, aimed at positioning the region as a hub of innovation, commerce, and industrial growth.
Speaker Abbas charged the committee, chaired by Hon. Chris Nkwonta (Ukwa East/Ukwa West Federal Constituency, Abia State), to ensure efficient oversight of the Commission’s activities. He stressed the need for transparency and accountability in utilizing funds allocated for infrastructure development.
“I charge this committee to ensure that the Commission hits the ground running by focusing on infrastructure development, supporting industries, developing human capital, and fostering peace and security in the region.
This is not just about policy monitoring; it is about improving the lives of millions who look to us for leadership and solutions,” Abbas said.
He urged committee members to approach their responsibilities with diligence and patriotism, noting that their work would set the foundation for the Commission’s success.
He also assured them of the full support of the House of Representatives in ensuring that the SEDC achieves its mandate.
“As we officially commence the activities of this committee, I want to assure you of the full support of my office and the House of Representatives. We will work hand in hand to ensure that the Commission achieves its objectives and becomes a model for regional development across the country,” he concluded.
The South East Development Commission was established to drive economic and infrastructural transformation in Nigeria’s Southeast region, addressing decades-long developmental challenges.
The newly inaugurated House Committee is expected to oversee its activities, ensuring effective implementation of policies that will benefit the region and the nation at large.
