Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has emphasized the need for any adjustments to electricity tariffs to be fair, equitable, and beneficial to all stakeholders. He made this statement at a special public hearing on the recent tariff hike, organized by the joint House committees on power, commerce, national planning, and delegated legislation.

Represented by Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Abbas acknowledged the concerns of Nigerians regarding the tariff hike and its potential impact on the economy and livelihoods. He stressed the importance of balancing consumer interests with sustainable growth and development in the energy sector.
The Speaker urged stakeholders to engage in constructive dialogue and provide valuable insights to guide the parliament’s decision-making process. He expressed the House’s commitment to working with the executive arm to transform the Nigerian power sector into a model of efficiency and sustainability.

Abbas also encouraged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to submit their memoranda to the committees, emphasizing the importance of partnership in achieving positive results.
The public hearing aims to examine all issues related to the tariff hike and proffer solutions that benefit all stakeholders.
