In a significant move to combat drug trafficking, the Senate has approved a bill advocating strict punitive measures, including the death penalty, for drug barons operating within the country’s borders.
The decision follows the comprehensive presentation of a committee report by Senator Monguno Tahir, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, regarding the proposed amendments to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) bill.
Senator Tahir emphasized that the implementation of this bill, once signed into law by President Bola Tinubu, would serve as a crucial deterrent against the illicit activities of drug barons, ultimately aiming to reduce their influence and curb associated crimes nationwide.
Furthermore, the bill introduces harsh penalties, such as imprisonment for up to fifteen years without the possibility of parole or fine, for individuals found guilty of consuming hard drugs.
This provision underscores the Senate’s commitment to addressing both the supply and demand sides of the drug trade, aiming for a comprehensive approach to tackling drug-related issues in the country.
