Senate President Chief Godswill Akpabio has emphasized the urgent need for increased police recruitment to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
He made this call while receiving the leadership of the Police Service Commission (PSC), led by its Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, at the National Assembly.
During the meeting, DIG Argungu highlighted several challenges facing the Commission, including inadequate funding and the need for independent budgetary allocation.
He also advocated for the establishment of functional zonal offices to enhance oversight of police officers across Nigeria’s 747 local government areas.
In response, Chief Akpabio acknowledged the necessity of expanding police recruitment but stressed the importance of proper screening to ensure that only qualified candidates are selected.
He assured the Commission that he would engage with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek solutions to its challenges.
The Senate President commended the PSC leadership for its efforts in improving policing and urged them to continue their work in strengthening the nation’s security framework.
The meeting was attended by key lawmakers, including Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin, Senator Osita Ngwu (Enugu West), and Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi.
Also present were Justice Adamu Paul Galumje (rtd.), representing the judiciary in the Commission, and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
The visit reinforced the ongoing collaboration between the National Assembly and the PSC in enhancing Nigeria’s security and law enforcement capabilities.
