Senate Passes North West Development Commission Bill to Address Regional Challenges

In a move to address the challenges facing the seven states in the North West geopolitical zone, the Senate has passed the North West Development Commission (NWDC) bill. The bill, sponsored by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I Jibrin, and 20 other senators from the region, aims to establish a commission to tackle the socio-economic development of the zone.

The Committee on Special Duties, chaired by Senator Shehu Lawan Kaka, presented its report, highlighting the intent and purpose of the bill as “well-structured and strategically streamlined” for the region’s development. The commission’s establishment is expected to bring the federal government closer to the North Western states and meet the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

The bill received unanimous support from senators when put to vote, with Senator Barau commending his colleagues for their support. He emphasized the importance of the commission in addressing the challenges facing the region, including the restoration of infrastructure destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents and bandits.

Describing the North West as the “food basket” of the country, Senator Barau stressed the need for the commission to ensure food security and provide necessary infrastructure for key sectors to thrive. The bill will now be sent to the House of Representatives for approval and subsequently to the President for assent.

This development marks a significant step towards addressing the region’s challenges and promoting socio-economic development in the North West geopolitical zone.
