Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Ph.D, has announced that the House introduced 1,351 bills and passed 89 draft legislations in its first legislative session, surpassing previous records since 1999.
Additionally, 679 motions were introduced, setting a record for the number of motions in the first session. The House has demonstrated its commitment to legislative efficiency, effectiveness, and oversight, holding the executive accountable and ensuring judicious use of public funds.
Key bills passed include the Access to Higher Education Act (Students Loan Bill), Electricity Act (Amendment) Bill, and Federal Audit Service Act (Amendment) Bill, which aim to promote investment in renewable energy, strengthen financial oversight, and enhance transparency.
As the House begins its second session, Speaker Abbas urged his colleagues to brace up for the challenges ahead, acknowledging that Nigeria still grapples with poverty, unemployment, and inequality. He emphasized the need for laws that promote economic growth, social justice, and environmental sustainability.
