PSC Warns Police Zone 13 Against Meddling in Land Disputes, Vows Disciplinary Action

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has issued a stern warning to officers of Zone 13 Police Headquarters in Ukpo, Anambra State, over their alleged involvement in civil disputes, particularly land matters.

The Commission expressed deep concern over the continued misconduct of officers in the zone despite repeated warnings to refrain from interfering in cases outside their jurisdiction.

This warning follows a petition submitted to the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), by Agbo & Agbo & Associates on behalf of the Umu Ukwueze family of Umudikwu, Ihe Nsukka. The petition accuses Inspector James of Zone 13 of intimidation, harassment, and abuse of power.

According to the complaint, one Mr. Jude Onah allegedly encroached on the family’s land and began construction. Despite efforts to resolve the matter legally, members of the Umu Ukwueze family were arrested and taken to Zone 13 without prior notice to their relatives.

The petitioners claim that even after filing a motion for the enforcement of their fundamental rights, Inspector James continued issuing threats and demanding further arrests.

The petition also alleges that the affected individuals were extorted, paying sums of N200,000 and N150,000, respectively, during the ordeal.

Reacting to the petition, the PSC described the situation as “shameful” and assured that all officers involved in the misconduct would face disciplinary action.

Chairman Argungu reiterated the Commission’s commitment to curbing human rights abuses in the South East, particularly in cases where police officers unlawfully interfere in civil disputes.

He warned that the police must allow the judiciary to handle such matters, emphasizing that the PSC will not tolerate any further violations.

“The Police should stay away from land disputes and allow the courts to do their job,” Argungu stated.

The Commission’s statement underscores its resolve to uphold professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force and ensure that officers operate within the limits of their mandate.
