PSC Reaffirms Commitment to Police Accountability, Hails PCRC at 41st Anniversary

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has restated its commitment to promoting accountability and professionalism within the Nigeria Police Force, as it joined in commemorating the 41st anniversary of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Abuja on Thursday.

Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, mni, made this known through Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the Commission, who represented him at the event.

Argungu emphasized the PSC’s constitutional mandate as an oversight body and reiterated its dedication to initiatives that foster transparency, people-centred policing, and adherence to the rule of law.

“For over four decades, the PCRC has served as a vital bridge between the Nigeria Police Force and the communities they serve,” he said. “Your unwavering commitment to fostering trust, mutual respect, and public confidence in policing has stood the test of time and become a cornerstone of community policing in Nigeria.”

The PSC Chairman praised the achievements of the PCRC over the years, highlighting its role in crime prevention and peacebuilding through collaboration and active citizen engagement.

He also underscored the importance of strengthening partnerships between the Police, the public, and oversight institutions, describing it as essential to ensuring national security.

“Let us continue to work together — Government, Police, Communities, and Civil Society — to deepen trust, embrace innovation, and institutionalize community-driven approaches that make our neighbourhoods safer for all,” Argungu urged.

He congratulated the PCRC on its milestone anniversary and expressed hope that the organization will continue to flourish in its mission of promoting synergy between law enforcement and citizens.

The PCRC was established in 1984 to promote effective collaboration between the police and the public in maintaining law and order across Nigeria.
