In a recent press release, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has strongly denounced the alarming increase in the killing of police officers while on official duties.
The commission emphasized that these officers are fellow Nigerians deserving of support, encouragement, and protection from citizens.
Expressing condolences to Inspector General of Police, Dr. Olukayode Egbetokun, the PSC highlighted the unfortunate timing of these incidents, occurring amidst efforts to combat militancy and banditry across the nation.
Dr. Solomon Arase, Chairman of the Commission and retired Inspector General of Police, voiced deep concern over the killings in various states, urging the Inspector General to reassess the leadership capacity of state commands nationwide.
Arase emphasized the need for accountability, stating that any State Commissioner of Police found wanting in competence, dereliction of duty, or operational deficiencies should be swiftly replaced to prevent further loss of police lives.
Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Arase stressed the importance of integrated intelligence policing to address the root causes of these incidents.
In a show of solidarity with the families of the fallen officers, Arase called upon state Command Commissioners to rise to the occasion, urging serving officers not to be discouraged but to exhibit the resilient spirit the Force is renowned for in combating this new wave of assaults.
The press release, issued by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, underscores the gravity of the situation and the PSC’s commitment to addressing the issue head-on.
