The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced with great pleasure the forthcoming visit of His Royal Highness Prince Harry and his wife, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan, to Nigeria in May 2024.
During their stay, the royal couple will engage with service members and participate in various cultural activities. Notably, Prince Harry, the Duke of Duchess, is the founder of the Invictus Games, an international multi-sport event designed to provide a recovery pathway for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel. The games also aim to raise awareness and recognition in society to support their rehabilitation efforts. With approximately 500 participants from 21 nations, including Nigeria, the Invictus Games have become a significant platform for showcasing resilience and camaraderie among servicemen and women.
The visit holds particular significance for Nigeria, as it aims to strengthen the country’s position within the Invictus Games community and explore the possibility of hosting the event in future years. The Honourable Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar Badaru, who attended last year’s event in Germany, has expressed Nigeria’s readiness to host the games if given the opportunity.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, issued the press release, highlighting the anticipation and excitement surrounding the upcoming royal visit and its potential impact on Nigeria’s involvement in the Invictus Games movement.
With Prince Harry and Meghan’s visit, Nigeria looks forward to furthering its commitment to supporting wounded warriors and fostering international cooperation in the realm of military rehabilitation and sportsmanship.
