POLICE TO ENFORCE THIRD-PARTY INSURANCE FROM FEBRUARY 1, 2025, AS IGP HOSTS NAICOM COMMISSIONER

The Nigeria Police Force has announced February 1, 2025, as the commencement date for the enforcement of compulsory third-party motor insurance for vehicle owners across the country.

This was disclosed today during a meeting between the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, and the Commissioner for Insurance, National Insurance Commission (NAICOM), Mr. Olusegun Ayo Omosehin, at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The NAICOM delegation, led by Mr. Omosehin, included other top officials, such as Dr. Usman Jankara, Deputy Commissioner (Technical); Mr. Ekerete Ola Gam-Ikon, Deputy Commissioner (Finance and Administration); and Dr. Talmiz Usman, Director (Legal, Enforcement, and Market Development).

The Commissioner commended the IGP for his achievements, particularly the establishment of the Police Insurance Bank Limited, and called for the police’s support in ensuring public compliance with insurance regulations.

Highlighting the significance of third-party insurance, Mr. Omosehin noted its role in safeguarding road users and called for collective efforts to enforce the policy nationwide.

Responding, the IGP underscored the legal framework underpinning third-party insurance, referencing Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, which mandate all vehicle owners to obtain third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads.

He emphasized that defaulters risk imprisonment, fines, or both and urged Nigerians to adhere to the law.

The IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to collaborating with NAICOM and other stakeholders in enforcing the policy and ensuring the safety and protection of lives and property.

He called on Nigerians to respect the law, stating that compliance will enhance accountability and promote public safety on the nation’s roads.

The announcement underscores the NPF’s dedication to fostering inter-agency cooperation in delivering quality services to Nigerians.
