Police Service Commission Chairman Visits Proposed Site for PSC Institute in Kano

The Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), retired Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, has expressed confidence that the Commission’s oversight responsibilities on the Nigeria Police Force will gain new momentum with the establishment of the Police Service Commission Institute in Kabo, Kano State.

According to a statement by Ikechukwu Ani, Head, Press and Public Relations of the commission, during a surprise visit to the proposed site of the Institute on Saturday, September 28, 2024, DIG Argungu highlighted the importance of the Institute, which will serve as an international training platform for PSC staff once the National Assembly passes the bill into law and it is signed by President Bola Tinubu.

The Police Service Commission currently oversees key functions such as the appointment, promotion, dismissal, and disciplinary control of police officers. The new Institute is expected to enhance the capacity of PSC staff in these areas by providing them with world-class training in line with corporate governance principles.

Speaking at the site in Kabo, DIG Argungu noted that the PSC’s oversight responsibilities were entering a new, positive phase. He emphasized that the Institute would not only operate at international standards but also be free of corruption.

Additionally, it will be open to foreign trainees from other countries where similar institutions exist to oversee police activities.

DIG Argungu commended the facilitator of the bill, Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Madori, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, for his innovative vision. He described the Institute as Nigeria’s contribution to global police oversight efforts, stressing that it will revolutionize the way police oversight is conducted in the country.

The PSC Chairman also assured that the Commission will continue to support efforts toward the realization of the Institute, which he believes will set a new benchmark for police oversight in Africa and beyond.
