Police Rescue Hostages, Arrest 17 for Murder in Two Separate Operations As IGP Egbetokun Reaffirms Commitment to Public Safety

In a series of decisive operations underscoring its commitment to public safety, the Nigeria Police Force has recorded significant breakthroughs in combating crime. Operatives of the Imo State Command successfully rescued four kidnapped hostages in a daring operation on Saturday, January 4, 2025.

The rescue mission, launched after a distress call regarding the abduction of four individuals in Umuokanne, Ohaji Local Government Area of Imo State, showcased the swift response capabilities of the police.

Engaging the kidnappers in a fierce gunfight, the operatives neutralized two suspects at the scene and recovered one AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and 21 rounds of live ammunition. The hostages were safely freed, reaffirming the Force’s commitment to protecting lives and property.

In a related development, operatives from the Ebonyi State Command arrested 17 suspects in Enohia Itim village, Afikpo Local Government Area, for the gruesome murder of one Uromchi Okorocha on January 3, 2025. The deceased had been accused of witchcraft and involvement in multiple deaths.

However, instead of reporting their suspicions to the authorities, a mob took the law into their own hands, apprehending and killing Mr. Okorocha before burning his remains.

Efforts by the Uwanna Division Police to intervene and prevent the act proved too late, as the mob had already carried out the extrajudicial killing before officers arrived.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, condemned the act of jungle justice, emphasizing that such actions undermine the rule of law and justice.

The IGP reiterated the Force’s dedication to ensuring public safety and justice, urging citizens to report suspected criminal activities to the nearest police station rather than resorting to self-help.

He further called on Nigerians to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by providing timely information to facilitate the arrest of criminals and ensure a safer society.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains resolute in its mission to rid our society of criminal elements, protect lives, and uphold the rule of law,” said ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer.

These operations are a testament to the unwavering resolve of the Nigeria Police to ensure a secure environment for all citizens. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant and support the police in their efforts to create a crime-free society.
