Police Nab Suspect in Online Recruitment Scam, Warns Public Against Cyber Fraud

The Nigeria Police Force, through its National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), has arrested a 28-year-old man, Dauda Samuel, over his alleged involvement in a recruitment scam, identity theft, and other cyber-related crimes.

The arrest followed credible intelligence and a series of complaints from members of the public about an individual impersonating Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Frank Mba on Facebook.

According to police authorities, the suspect used a fake account bearing the DIG’s name and image to falsely advertise a non-existent police recruitment exercise, defrauding unsuspecting Nigerians of their money under the guise of offering them employment into the Force.

Samuel was apprehended in Panda Village, Nasarawa State, and has since confessed to the crime. He is said to be cooperating with investigators, providing useful information that is aiding further inquiries into the case.

Police spokesperson, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement from Force Headquarters, disclosed that digital forensic experts are working to uncover other potential accomplices and trace additional online activities linked to the suspect.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, warned cybercriminals to desist from illegal activities or face the full weight of the law.

He also urged Nigerians to exercise caution while engaging online, especially with individuals making suspicious offers, emphasizing that people should remain vigilant and verify claims before taking any action.

The police advised the public to report suspicious activities to appropriate authorities as part of efforts to stem the tide of cybercrime in the country.
