Police Debunks Claims of Raid on NLC Secretariat, Clarifies Operations

The Nigeria Police Force has firmly denied reports suggesting that it raided the National Secretariat of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), commonly referred to as the Labour House, located in the Central Business District of Abuja.

This clarification comes in response to allegations made in a press release dated August 7, 2024, by the NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations.

The release claimed that police officers, accompanied by individuals dressed in black T-shirts and plain clothes, conducted a raid on the Labour House.

In an official statement released today, the Nigeria Police Force emphasized that their operation was not targeted at the NLC or its Secretariat.

According to the police, the operation was aimed at apprehending a prime criminal suspect who had been traced to a shop within the same building as the NLC Secretariat.

The suspect, identified as a foreign national, is reportedly involved in a series of criminal activities across Nigeria and other African countries.

The police noted that the operation, carried out by detectives with the appropriate legal authorization, was part of an ongoing investigation critical to national and regional security.

“The NLC Secretariat, its staff, and leadership were not involved in this operation, which was exclusively focused on the apprehension of the suspect,” the police statement read.

The force further explained that the shop in question, located within the Labour House complex, was being used by the suspect as a front for his illicit activities.

The Nigeria Police Force called on the leadership of the NLC to support the ongoing investigation, highlighting the importance of cooperation in ensuring the safety and security of the nation.

The suspect’s high-profile status is said to pose a significant threat to security, underscoring the need for the swift and decisive action taken by the police.

Reaffirming their commitment to upholding the rule of law and respecting human rights, the police urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, particularly in screening individuals who seek to rent space within their premises.

The statement was signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police.
