Oil Spill Devastates Rivers State Communities, Sparks Environmental and Livelihoods Concerns

A massive oil spill has triggered alarm and despair among residents of Andoni Local Government Area (LGA) in Rivers State, leaving communities grappling with environmental damage and the destruction of livelihoods.

According to a statement by Kome Odhomor HOMEF Media/Communication Lead & Oilwatch Africa Communications Officer, the spill, which occurred on December 13, 2024, is suspected to have originated from a Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) facility in Bonny Island, spreading along the Oyorokoto/Agbama/Imo River axis.

Reports indicate that the spill, possibly caused by a pipeline rupture at Shell’s Bonny loading terminal, has already impacted areas over 40 kilometers away. Wave action threatens to carry the pollution further, endangering additional communities along the coastline.

Residents recall a similar incident earlier this year on May 11, when a spill from Shell’s Trans Niger Pipeline devastated the Asarama community in Andoni LGA, contaminating the environment and crippling fishing activities.

Stakeholders, including representatives of the Andoni Host and Impacted Communities Bureau, the National Youth Council of Nigeria (Andoni Chapter), and environmental activists, have visited the affected areas.

They expressed dismay over the scale of the disaster, citing extensive damage to fishing nets, boats, and marine ecosystems. Local fishermen now face a dire situation, unable to earn a living due to contaminated waterways and destroyed habitats.

Nnimmo Bassey, Director of the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), highlighted the recurring nature of such incidents in the Niger Delta, attributing them to aging pipelines and equipment failures.

“These spills are harsh realities for community folks in the Niger Delta. Many times, nothing is done, and communities are left to suffer,” Bassey stated.

The affected communities are demanding immediate action from Shell and relevant authorities. They call for containment of the spill, comprehensive cleanup and remediation efforts, and adequate compensation for those impacted.

Environmental advocates have also urged regulatory agencies to hold oil companies accountable for their operations and ensure justice for the affected communities.

This latest incident underscores the long-standing environmental challenges in the Niger Delta, where oil spills have repeatedly disrupted lives and ecosystems.

The urgent need for proactive measures to prevent such disasters has never been clearer.
