The Northern Governors’ Forum has resolved to establish a Regional Security Fund to address the persistent security challenges facing the region. This decision was made during a meeting with Traditional Rulers from the region, held in Kaduna, Nigeria.

The region has grappled with various security threats, including Boko Haram, ISWAP, banditry, kidnapping, farmer-herder clashes, and illegal mining activities, which have made the region vulnerable to criminal elements. To combat these threats, each state is expected to contribute 1 billion naira monthly to the fund.
The Forum has also proposed a six-month suspension of all mining exploration activities in member states to allow for revalidation of licenses. Additionally, they have thrown their weight behind the President’s pronouncement to allow state policing, calling on the National and State Houses of Assembly to expedite the necessary legislative processes.
The Governors have pledged their continuous support to the administration’s fight against insurgency, appreciating the President’s proactive role in securing the release of various abductees. This initiative is seen as a renewed effort to tackle the security challenges facing the region.
The establishment of the Regional Security Fund is expected to enhance security measures and promote stability in the region. The Forum is committed to working with the federal government to address the security concerns and ensure the safety of citizens.
