In a major step towards enhancing Nigeria’s domestic gas utilization and achieving energy security, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) and its partners have commenced the construction of five mini-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants in Ajaokuta, Kogi State.
The groundbreaking ceremony, held on Thursday, marks a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s Gas Revolution Agenda.
The five plants—NNPC Prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, Highland LNG, and LNG Arete—will collectively process 97 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (mmscf/d). NNPC Ltd. holds a majority stake in three of the projects, with private investors spearheading the development of the remaining two.
Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd., Mele Kyari, described the initiative as a strategic leap toward energy sufficiency, industrial support, and carbon emission reduction.
He emphasized that the projects would provide cleaner and cheaper energy solutions while fostering economic growth, job creation, and industrialization.
“These Mini LNG facilities will ensure the efficient transportation of gas over long distances, providing a cleaner and cheaper source of energy to households, mobility, industries, and businesses. This is particularly important for regions that currently lack access to gas pipeline infrastructure,” Kyari stated.
He attributed NNPC Ltd’s progress in gas infrastructure projects to the unwavering support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the initiative aligns with the administration’s goal of utilizing Nigeria’s gas resources for economic transformation.
Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, hailed the development as an unprecedented feat in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to harnessing the country’s abundant gas resources to drive industrialization, reduce carbon emissions, and improve the well-being of Nigerians.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for siting the projects in the state, stating that they would create employment opportunities and attract further investments. He assured of the state government’s support in ensuring the project’s successful execution.
Chairman of NNPC Ltd., Chief Pius Akinyelure, described the milestone as a significant advancement in Nigeria’s energy sector and a key part of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ushering in a new era of sustainable energy and industrial growth.
The launch of these mini-LNG plants represents a crucial step in Nigeria’s efforts to leverage its vast gas reserves for economic development, energy security, and environmental sustainability.
