Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has swiftly responded to the partial collapse of the newly constructed Nkpa bridge in Bende Federal Constituency, Abia State. The bridge, which was attracted by Kalu after a landmark motion, caved in after a series of downpours, as seen in a viral video.
Kalu’s office has written to the Ecological Office, expressing concern over technical deficiencies found on the bridge. The Ecological Office, consultant MX Consulting Engineering Services, and contractor Nespresco Services Limited will appear before the parliament for an urgent meeting with the Ecological Funds Committee. This move aims to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse and find lasting solutions.
The collapse of the Nkpa bridge raises serious questions about the quality of construction, materials used, and oversight. Kalu’s office has clarified that the Deputy Speaker did not appoint the contractors, as members of parliament do not have statutory powers to choose contractors. Deputy Speaker Kalu has declined all invitations to commission the project until its integrity is proven. He urges the people of Nkpa, Bende constituents, Abians, and users of the bridge and Nkpa road to remain calm as efforts are being made to find lasting solutions.
