Abbas noted that despite facing critical challenges, Nigeria has demonstrated resilience and potential for recovery, achieving a 3.19% GDP growth in the second quarter of 2024. He acknowledged concerns surrounding unemployment and currency depreciation but expressed optimism for sustainable growth, citing international organizations’ recognition of Nigeria’s efforts to diversify its economy and improve fiscal stability

The Speaker emphasized the importance of collaboration with the Executive to secure economic stability, enhance security, and foster national development. He stressed that lawmakers must prioritize legislative reforms to strengthen security institutions and address emerging challenges. Abbas commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Counter-Terrorism Bill into law and announced the House’s plan to hold a high-level Legislative Security Summit to tackle Nigeria’s urgent security challenges.
Key areas of focus for the House include economic reforms, youth empowerment, healthcare, infrastructure, and education. Abbas emphasized the need for urgent legislative action to drive recovery, attract investments, create jobs, and provide relief through targeted social welfare programs. He highlighted the importance of supporting vulnerable populations through initiatives like the Student Loan Scheme .
