In a bid to bolster Nigeria’s defense capabilities and foster self-reliance in the production of military equipment, the Honourable Minister of Defence, Muhammed Badaru Abubakar, conducted a comprehensive tour of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) facilities in Kaduna.
During the one-day working visit, Minister Badaru emphasized the significance of the recently enacted DICON bill, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. He highlighted its potential to invigorate the economy and propel Nigeria towards becoming self-sufficient in the manufacturing of military hardware.
Accompanied by the Director-General of DICON, Maj Gen AE Edet, Minister Badaru inspected various facilities including the DICON Imperium Facility, DICON Primer Cap Factory in Kachia, and the DICON Ordnance Factory. Expressing satisfaction with the progress made, Minister Badaru envisioned Nigeria emerging as a hub for defense equipment production upon the completion of these projects in collaboration with DICON.
“I am pleased to witness the dedication and progress at these facilities. With the impending commissioning of these factories and the support of DICON, Nigeria is on track to meet its defense needs locally. So far, the progress is commendable,” Minister Badaru remarked.
He lauded companies such as Imperium DICON Complex, Proforce Nigeria Limited, and EPAIL Ltd for their substantial investments in local defense manufacturing. These investments encompass the production of bulletproof vests, ballistic helmets, guard booths, and the assembly of light Armoured Assault Vehicles.
In response, Major General AE Edet, Director-General of DICON, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for enacting the DICON bill into law. He underscored the transformative impact of the legislation, which aims to curtail import dependency and promote domestic production.
With burgeoning partnerships with indigenous companies, Major General Edet projected Nigeria’s ascension as a leading supplier of defense gadgets and equipment, not only within Africa but on the global stage.
The visit serves as a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing its defense capabilities and fostering self-reliance in the production of essential military equipment.
