The Honourable Minister of Defence of Nigeria, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has called on ECOWAS member states to strengthen collaboration in tackling security challenges in the sub-region.
He made this appeal while opening the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff in Abuja.
In his remarks, Minister Badaru emphasized the need for a comprehensive and sustainable strategy to address growing threats, including terrorism, organized crime, cybercrime, and climate change.
He noted that rising global populism and ideological shifts have further exposed the region to instability.
“The imperative for us in the sub-region to strengthen our bond and collective resolve is greater now than ever,” he stated. “We must recognize that we are collectively as strong as our weakest link.”
A major highlight of the meeting was the activation of the ECOWAS Standby Force, which Minister Badaru described as a pivotal step in combating terrorism and insurgency.
Discussions also focused on peace support operations and maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The Defence Minister commended the Chiefs of Defence Staff for their dedication and urged them to approach the deliberations with unity and determination to ensure a more secure and prosperous future for West Africa.
