In a decisive move to counteract terrorist activities, the Nigerian Army’s Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) detachment conducted an air strike on Ligarma Village in Kaduna State on the night of December 3, 2023. The operation, initiated at approximately 2200hrs, aimed to thwart imminent threats posed by terrorists known to inhabit the region.
Aerial surveillance identified the movement of groups displaying tactics and characteristics synonymous with known terrorist activities. The observed advance of these individuals posed a significant threat to key infrastructure within the area, prompting the military to take swift action to safeguard innocent civilians.
While acknowledging the unfortunate reality that terrorists often embed themselves within civilian populations, the Nigerian military emphasized its commitment to distinguishing between civilians and combatants. Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, expressed deep regret over any civilian casualties, emphasizing that the military views each civilian death as a tragedy and strives to prevent such incidents.
Major General Buba highlighted the military’s ongoing efforts to minimize civilian casualties, citing the issuance of precise instructions to communities. The directive encourages communities, particularly those in known terrorist-infested areas, to keep the military informed about their activities, facilitating the distinction between friendly and suspicious actions.
Emphasizing adherence to international law, Major General Buba assured the public that the armed forces would maintain a determined and cautious approach in eradicating terrorism from the nation. He acknowledged the challenges posed by terrorists disguising themselves as civilians and assured that the military would continue to innovate solutions to confront these evolving tactics.
The air strike in Ligarma Village is part of the military’s broader strategy to eliminate terrorist threats and ensure the safety of the Nigerian population. The armed forces remain resolute in their mission to counter terrorism while minimizing the impact on innocent lives.
