Nigerian Army Refutes Reports of Mass Resignation Due to Corruption

The Nigerian Army has dismissed recent media reports suggesting that soldiers are resigning en masse due to corruption, low morale, and other welfare-related issues.

In a statement released on September 8, 2024, by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, the Army described the allegations as baseless and a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity and patriotism of its personnel.

The statement was a response to reports published by Sahara Reporters and similar platforms, which claimed that soldiers were leaving the Army due to widespread dissatisfaction.

The Army clarified that service in the military is voluntary, and personnel are free to disengage following established procedures.

It emphasized that discharges are routine and follow the protocols outlined in the Harmonized Terms and Conditions of Service for both officers and soldiers.

The Army noted that the process of discharge allows personnel to prepare and secure their entitlements, including pensions and gratuities.

The statement criticized the media reports for failing to investigate the true reasons behind the personnel discharges, which could range from voluntary retirement, medical grounds, or the pursuit of other professional interests.

The Army stressed that these reasons are confidential, and the insinuations of mass resignations due to welfare issues are grossly misleading.

Contrary to the reports, the Nigerian Army highlighted that its personnel are highly motivated and that their welfare is a top priority under the leadership of Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja.

The statement pointed to several initiatives, such as the Affordable Housing Option for All Soldiers Scheme (AHOOAS), which enables soldiers to own homes and secure post-service accommodation.

Additionally, significant investments are being made in the rehabilitation of Army infrastructure, payment of allowances, and the provision of medical services for troops and their families.

The Army also underscored ongoing efforts to enhance operational effectiveness, including the injection of combat enablers across all theaters of operation and continuous training programs for personnel.

The statement concluded by urging media organizations to verify their information before publication and avoid becoming conduits for disinformation.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and morale of its personnel, ensuring that they remain motivated and fully equipped to defend the nation.
