In a pivotal gathering aimed at reviewing past achievements, assessing current challenges, and strategizing for the future, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General TA Lagbaja, delivered the opening remarks at the Chief of Army Staff First Quarter Conference 2024.

The conference, held at the Army Headquarters Command Officers Mess 1 in Asokoro, Abuja, convened top military brass and field commanders on Tuesday, 16th April 2024.

Addressing the assembly, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja expressed his delight in welcoming the esteemed attendees, emphasizing the significance of such gatherings in fostering unity and charting the way forward for the Nigerian Army amidst evolving security landscapes.

The Chief of Army Staff began by acknowledging the tragic incident on 14th March 2024, which claimed the lives of the Commanding Officer, three officers, and thirteen soldiers from the 181 Amphibious Battalion in the Okuama community.

Despite the setback, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja urged resilience and adaptability among the military ranks, emphasizing the need to confront the prevailing volatile and complex security challenges with ingenuity and innovation.

Highlighting the progress made in stabilizing national security, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja commended the efforts in the North East theatre, where specialized operations such as MOUNTAIN SANITY II, LAKE SANITY II, and DESERT SANITY III have significantly degraded terrorist groups, enhancing public trust in the Army.

The Chief of Army Staff also lauded successful offensives against armed bandits in the North West and North Central regions through Operations HADARIN DAJI, FOREST SANITY, and WHIRL PUNCH, which have dismantled criminal hideouts and neutralized scores of bandits.

Turning to the South South and South East regions, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja noted the commendable performance of troops in Joint Task Force Operation DELTA SAFE and Operation UDO KA, leading to the neutralization of IPOB/ESN criminals and the recovery of illegal weapons and oil refineries.

Underlining the Army’s commitment to global peace and security, the Chief of Army Staff highlighted Nigeria’s participation in peacekeeping missions in Abyei, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau, showcasing the nation’s dedication to fostering peace both domestically and internationally.

In a bid to enhance troops’ welfare, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja announced new initiatives such as the Affordable Home Ownership Option for All Soldiers (AHOOAS) and increased insurance benefits, demonstrating the Army’s commitment to supporting personnel and their families.

Expressing gratitude to the political leadership for their support, Lt. Gen. Lagbaja reiterated the Army’s dedication to preserving national integrity and upholding justice and equity.

As the conference transitions into closed sessions, the Chief of Army Staff encouraged participants to engage in candid discussions and provide insightful solutions to bolster the Army’s strategies and policies, ensuring a more secure Nigeria.

With Lt. Gen. Lagbaja’s declaration, the Chief of Army Staff First Quarter Conference 2024 officially commenced, promising robust deliberations and strategic planning to reinforce the Nigerian Army’s success in safeguarding the nation’s interests.

Lt. Gen Lagbaja presented Hilux vehicles to 13 Army Warrant Officers in recognition of their meritorious and unblemished service through the NA to the nation.

A side attraction at the conference was the inspection of an electric motorbike locally manufactured by Electric Vehicle Motor Company, Nigeria.

He also commissioned a multipurpose building, as part of Army Headquarters Officers’ Mess to promote the bond of friendship, camaraderie and boost morale of personnel.
