Nigerian Army Disputes Property Ownership Allegations in Enugu: Sets Record Straight

The Nigerian Army (NA) has rebutted claims made by the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN) regarding an alleged attempt to unlawfully seize property in Enugu. Responding to the viral petition, the NA clarified that the property in question rightfully belongs to the military institution.

The dispute centers around a property located at Plot 30, Abakaliki Road, Enugu, including No. 7 Abakaliki Lane in the Government Residential Area (GRA) of Enugu State.

CRRAN’s petition accused the 82 Division of the NA of threatening to forcefully take over the property and disregarding legal protocols.

However, the NA refuted these claims, asserting that the property was previously occupied by Col Emeka Ugwuoke Rtd during his service.

Following his retirement, attempts were made to convert the quarter into private property, prompting the NA to reclaim ownership in April 2023.

Surprisingly, trespassers then invaded a corner of the property after the NA ejected the retired senior officer.

Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized the NA’s adherence to human rights and the rule of law.

He urged the public to dismiss allegations of unlawful behavior, affirming the NA’s commitment to due process and legal resolution.

In response to the controversy, the NA called for a thorough investigation and reiterated its readiness to present evidence of ownership to the appropriate authorities.

The institution emphasized its dedication to upholding Nigerian legal standards and resolving the dispute through proper channels.

The statement from Major General Nwachukwu on May 9, 2024, seeks to clarify the situation and dispel misinformation surrounding the property ownership dispute in Enugu.
