Nigerian Armed Forces Make Significant Gains in 2024, Neutralize Over 10,000 Terrorists

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have recorded remarkable successes in their counter-terrorism and security operations across the country in 2024.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, highlighted the military’s efforts in combating insurgency, terrorism, armed banditry, kidnapping, and other criminal activities threatening national peace and security.

Throughout the year, troops relentlessly targeted terrorist enclaves and hideouts, eliminating over a thousand high-profile terrorist leaders, commanders, and combatants. Notable figures neutralized include Dutse Mainasara Idda, Mallam Saleh Umaru, Mohammed Amadu, and Tochukwu Awo (aka Ojoto).

In total, the military neutralized 10,937 terrorists, arrested 12,538 suspects, and rescued 7,063 hostages. This robust offensive has significantly degraded the operational and fighting capabilities of terrorist groups nationwide.

Recovered Weapons and Assets
The military recovered an impressive cache of arms and ammunition during operations. These include:

Weapons: 4,332 AK-47 rifles, 1,244 locally fabricated guns, 838 dane guns, and 259 pump-action guns.

Ammunition: 128,496 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 45,445 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition, and 5,103 cartridges.

Stolen Resources: 56,223,002 liters of crude oil, 9,735,836 liters of illegally refined diesel, and other petroleum products.

The military estimates that these recoveries prevented crude oil theft valued at over ₦68 billion, delivering a significant blow to organized crime syndicates.

The Armed Forces emphasized the importance of collaboration with neighboring countries and regional bodies to tackle cross-border terrorism effectively. Troops remain committed to providing security dividends to Nigerian citizens and urged civilians to support the military’s efforts.

The military believes the successes of 2024 signal a turning point in the fight against terrorism.

“Many of the outcomes this year are indicative of a major defeat for terrorists in 2025,” the press release stated. Troops are described as being in high spirits, fully devoted to their mission, and prepared to intensify their efforts in the new year.

Major General Buba concluded by reaffirming that the fight against terrorism is a collective responsibility and called on citizens to continue their support to ensure lasting peace and security in Nigeria.
