The Nigerian Armed Forces have escalated their military operations across the country, aimed at dismantling terrorist networks and enhancing national security.
Addressing newsmen on October 10, 2024, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed the progress made in recent operations, highlighting significant gains in the fight against insurgents, oil theft, and other criminal activities.
According to Major General Buba, the military has mobilized lethal forces, including airstrikes, to target terrorists and their strongholds.
Troops have been strategically deployed across various regions, focusing on eliminating terrorist leaders and disrupting their operations.
In one notable victory, a notorious terrorist commander, Mai Hijabi, was neutralized in Jigawa State.
During the week under review, troops neutralized 165 terrorists and arrested 238 suspects involved in terrorist activities. In addition, 35 individuals were apprehended for oil theft, while 188 kidnapped hostages were rescued.
The military also prevented the theft of crude oil valued at over N688 million in the South-South region.
The military’s efforts have yielded substantial results in terms of arms recovery. Troops confiscated 153 assorted weapons, including AK47 rifles, fabricated guns, and pistols, as well as 2,182 rounds of ammunition.
Other seized items included vehicles, motorcycles, mobile phones, and various materials used for illegal activities.
In the Niger Delta region, the military discovered and destroyed 65 illegal refining sites, 58 boats, 39 storage tanks, and other equipment used in oil theft operations.
Troops also recovered nearly 800,000 litres of stolen crude oil and over 64,000 litres of illegally refined diesel.
Despite these successes, the military acknowledges ongoing security challenges in certain parts of the country. Major General Buba emphasized that operations are being reassessed to ensure the protection and safety of all citizens.
He also issued a stern warning to individuals or groups attempting to disrupt military operations, cautioning that the consequences of such actions could be severe.
The Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to ensuring peace and security nationwide, with new strategies being developed to address emerging threats.
