In a bold and highly coordinated operation, the Nigerian Armed Forces delivered a decisive strike against banditry in Zamfara State, successfully neutralizing scores of fighters loyal to notorious bandit leader Kachallah Bello Turji.
The assault, codenamed Operation FANSAN YAMMA, was executed on 10 January 2025 and combined precise airstrikes with synchronized ground engagements to dismantle Turji’s stronghold at Fakai Hills.
According to military sources, the operation dealt a severe blow to Turji’s network, with many of his fighters killed and others, including key commanders, sustaining critical injuries.
The whereabouts of Turji himself remain unknown, further pressuring his embattled group.
The operation was orchestrated with the aid of real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, enabling accurate identification and engagement of targets.
Military aircraft launched multiple strikes, using rockets and cannons to devastate enemy positions. Ground troops, in close communication with the aircrew, capitalized on the air support to rout the fleeing bandits, eliminating additional targets east of the hill.
The mission’s success has sparked widespread relief and celebration among locals in Zamfara State, who have endured years of insecurity caused by banditry.
In addition to neutralizing the fighters, the operation led to the rescue of several kidnapped victims, bringing renewed hope to families affected by abductions in the region.
Air Vice Marshal Olusola F. Akinboyewa, Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, reaffirmed the military’s commitment to restoring peace and security nationwide.
“Together, we will defeat all enemies militating against the security of our territories and the wellbeing of our people, paving the way for peace and prosperity in our Great Nation,” he stated.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts by the Armed Forces to eradicate criminal activities and secure Nigeria’s troubled regions.
The success of the operation is a testament to the resolve and efficiency of the military in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity and the safety of its citizens.
