The Nigerian Armed Forces have expressed serious concerns over recent unprovoked attacks on military personnel, as they continue to make significant strides in their counter-terrorism operations across the country.
Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, condemned the assault on unarmed soldiers at Banex Plaza in Abuja and the killing of 17 personnel in Okuama, Delta State.
These violent incidents, described as detrimental to national security, have sparked outrage within the military community. “These occurrences are unhealthy for our national security, counterproductive, and amount to self-sabotage,”
Major General Buba stated. He emphasized that such acts undermine the morale and effectiveness of troops who risk their lives daily to protect the nation.
Despite these setbacks, the Armed Forces reported considerable progress in their counter-terrorism efforts throughout May.
The military successfully neutralized 624 terrorists and arrested 1,051 individuals, including logistic suppliers and informants. Additionally, 563 hostages were rescued during various operations.
Troops also confiscated 707 assorted weapons, including 411 AK-47 rifles and 234 locally fabricated guns, along with 16,487 rounds of ammunition.
In a related effort to curb oil theft, the military recovered over ₦705 million worth of stolen crude oil and refined products, including 4.87 million liters of crude oil and 931,416 liters of illegally refined AGO.
Major General Buba highlighted the growing support for the military’s operations, both institutionally and from the general public. He praised the joint efforts with other security and intelligence agencies, which have enhanced the effectiveness of military operations.
The Armed Forces reiterated the need for public support in combating terrorism.
Major General Buba urged citizens to report any misconduct by military personnel through appropriate channels, assuring that the military justice system would address such issues.
He emphasized that public cooperation is crucial for maintaining the morale and fighting spirit of the troops.
“The military has demonstrated a high sense of discipline and professionalism in the face of untoward attacks. Our professionalism must not be mistaken for weakness,” he asserted, calling for a united front to ensure national security.
The Nigerian Armed Forces remain committed to their mission of eradicating terrorism and ensuring the safety of all citizens.
Major General Buba assured that operations would continue until terrorist threats are fully neutralized, paving the way for a safer and more prosperous nation.
