Nigeria is set to deepen its defence partnership with Germany through a new cycle of projects spearheaded by the German Technical Advisory Group (GTAG).
This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, during a meeting with a high-level GTAG delegation led by Mr. Marcus Ohm at Ship House, Abuja.
Dr. Kana expressed optimism about the renewed collaboration, stating, “I am happy for accepting the new project circle, and I promise we are going to sustain it.”
He commended the progress made since GTAG’s last visit and noted that the Nigerian government has developed a comprehensive framework for defence projects. The Defence Headquarters, he added, has been tasked with ensuring proper coordination, planning, and execution of initiatives within the framework.
The Permanent Secretary underscored the importance of modernizing the Nigerian Armed Forces. He highlighted key areas such as enhanced intelligence sharing, equipment upgrades, capacity building, and greater involvement of Nigerian personnel in project planning and execution to ensure long-term sustainability.
In his remarks, Mr. Marcus Ohm expressed satisfaction with Nigeria’s advancements in defence projects. “The project is going in the right direction,” he noted, reaffirming Germany’s commitment to delivering successful outcomes.
The meeting underscored the mutual benefits of the partnership, emphasizing transparency, dedication, and strengthened collaboration between the two nations.
Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations, stated that this renewed partnership aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to bolster its defence capabilities and maintain security across the region.
