Nigeria to Enhance Air Surveillance and Security with Strategic Spain Visit


In a significant move to bolster Nigeria’s air safety and security, a high-powered delegation led by the Minister of Defence, H.E Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, is currently in Spain for critical discussions on advancing the nation’s airspace capabilities.

The delegation’s three-day visit to Indra, a leading global technology and consulting company, focuses on the mission titled “Air Surveillance for the Sovereignty, Security, and Safety of the Nigerian Airspace through Dual Use Technology (Civil and Military).” This initiative aims to upgrade Nigeria’s air surveillance infrastructure with cutting-edge dual-use technology, crucial for both civil and military applications, thereby ensuring the safety of the nation’s airspace and borders.

Indra’s CEO, Jose Vicente de los Mozos, along with senior executives, extended a warm welcome to the Nigerian delegation. Key figures from Indra present during the visit included Javier Ruano, VP of ATM; Luis Permuy, VP of International Sales; Emeric Osmont, Director of West Africa; Sergio Sanchez, Director for Institutional Relationships; and General (Rtd) Francisco Almerich, Former Chief of Air Defence Command Centre, Spanish Airforce.

During their stay, the delegation toured Indra’s headquarters, Simulator Factory, and Academy, where they inspected the latest security and safety equipment. The visit featured comprehensive presentations and demonstrations on the latest Air Traffic Control System (ACC APP TWR), Dual Project Scope Definition, Voice Communications System, and Radar and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS).

The Nigerian delegation included high-ranking officials such as Abdulfatai Buhari, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation; Abdullahi Idris Garba, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation; and Air Marshall Hassan Bala Abubakar, Chief of Air Staff.

This strategic visit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to enhancing its air surveillance and security capabilities in line with global best practices. The collaboration with Indra is expected to bring significant advancements, including improved air safety, fortified border security, and strengthened defense capabilities.
