Nigeria, Switzerland Move to Deepen Defence Cooperation

The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and the Swiss government have expressed commitment to sustaining and strengthening their existing defence collaboration, with emphasis on non-kinetic approaches to addressing security challenges.

This was disclosed on Thursday when the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Patrick Felix Egloff, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General OO Oluyede, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Egloff reaffirmed Switzerland’s readiness to deepen diplomatic and defence relations with Nigeria, noting that his country is particularly interested in supporting non-kinetic initiatives such as humanitarian engagement and programmes aimed at promoting peace and stability.

He stressed the need for sustained collaboration between both countries, especially in areas that tackle the root causes of insecurity through dialogue, development assistance and strong institutional partnerships.

In his response, General Oluyede welcomed the Swiss envoy and appreciated Switzerland’s continued interest in Nigeria’s security and stability. He acknowledged Switzerland’s contributions to non-kinetic efforts in the country, describing such partnerships as vital in complementing ongoing military operations.

The Defence Chief expressed optimism that the existing relationship between Nigeria and Switzerland would be further strengthened, yielding more impactful outcomes in areas of mutual interest, particularly peacebuilding and strategic cooperation.

The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to constructive engagement and collaborative approaches to security.
