In a significant boost to global law enforcement cooperation, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has intensified its partnership with the National Police Agency of Japan (NPA) in the fight against cybercrime.
This strengthened collaboration has already yielded results, leading to the arrest of 11 individuals involved in various cyber-related offenses.
The development was announced during a press briefing at the NPF National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC), where officials highlighted the growing success of international cooperation in tackling online fraud.
The arrested suspects are accused of engaging in crimes such as identity theft, romance scams, and computer-related fraud, specifically targeting Japanese victims from Nigeria.
According to police sources, the operation was launched following reports received on April 3, 2024, from Nigeria’s National Central Bureau (NCB) and the NCB Tokyo. These reports detailed five cybercrime cases linked to 13 identified perpetrators operating from Nigeria.
Investigations led to the apprehension of 11 suspects and uncovered a complex network using social media, particularly Instagram, to deceive victims into fraudulent romantic relationships.
The victims were manipulated into transferring funds through wire transactions, which were later converted into cryptocurrency and transferred to digital wallets in Nigeria.
So far, law enforcement has recovered $33,320 from the suspects, with ongoing efforts to recover more stolen funds and dismantle the syndicate responsible for the crimes.
Reaffirming its commitment to ensuring security both online and offline, the Nigeria Police Force emphasized its resolve to deploy all available resources and leverage emerging technologies to combat cybercrime.
The NPF assured the public that it remains dedicated to protecting citizens and strengthening international cooperation to curb the rising threats of cyber fraud.
