Nigeria, Niger Sign MOU to Boost Security Cooperation

In a significant move to strengthen regional security, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of Nigeria, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, met with his Nigerien counterpart, General Moussa Salaou Barmou, in Niamey on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

The meeting marked the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at enhancing security cooperation between the two neighboring countries.

During the discussions, both leaders underscored the importance of sustained dialogue and collaboration to tackle shared security challenges and bolster the strategic partnership between Nigeria and Niger.

The focus was on maintaining and expanding existing cooperation, including joint military operations, intelligence sharing, and tactical coordination.

The Defence Chiefs expressed concern over the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the region, acknowledging the destabilizing effects these weapons have on regional security.

They agreed to intensify efforts to curb the illicit flow of arms and enhance border security.

Both sides also pledged to support regional and international initiatives aimed at controlling and reducing the spread of these weapons.

In a joint statement, the Defence Chiefs reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and security.

Nigeria emphasized its longstanding principle of good neighborliness, ensuring that its territory would not be used to destabilize Niger or any other neighboring country.

In response, Niger confirmed its readiness to resume active participation in security cooperation under the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJT).

General Barmou accepted an invitation from General Musa to visit Nigeria, where they will finalize the details of the newly agreed-upon cooperation.

Additionally, both parties agreed to establish an advisory group to facilitate ongoing communication and address mutual security concerns.

This group will develop measures to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the two nations.

During his visit, General Musa also paid a courtesy call on Nigerien Deputy Minister of National Defence, General Sani Kache, further solidifying the ties between the two countries.

The signing of the MOU is seen as a significant step towards enhancing regional security and stability in West Africa.
