Nigeria Endorses Brazilian Candidate for Interpol General Secretary


Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, the Honourable Minister of Police Affairs, has thrown Nigeria’s weight behind Mr. Valdecy Urquiza’s candidacy for the position of Interpol Secretary General.

The endorsement came during a visit by an INTERPOL team led by Mr. Urquiza to the Headquarters of the Ministry of Police Affairs in Abuja.

Senator Gaidam emphasized that Mr. Urquiza’s candidacy represents a new era in Interpol’s leadership and highlighted his experience and dedication as compelling qualifications for the role of Secretary General.

He urged all partners and allies to join hands in supporting Mr. Urquiza’s candidacy, citing Nigeria’s commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent election process.

Highlighting the longstanding collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil, Senator Gaidam noted their joint efforts in combating various forms of crime, including counterterrorism, transnational crime, and cybersecurity.

He expressed confidence in Mr. Urquiza’s leadership skills and dedication to international security, stating that his appointment would further strengthen the bond between the two nations.

Mr. Urquiza, in his appeal for support, emphasized the need for reform within Interpol to better serve its member countries.

He stressed the importance of diversity and neutrality, pointing out that his candidacy represents the first opportunity for a Secretary General from a developing nation.

He pledged to prioritize the needs of all member countries and work towards a more inclusive and effective Interpol.
