Celebrating 25 Years of Unbroken                                 Democracy

The National Assembly is set to commemorate 25 years of continuous democracy and legislative practice in Nigeria with a special joint session on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. This milestone event will feature a keynote speech by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, commemorative lectures, and the unveiling of the new National Assembly Library Complex named after the President.

The joint sitting, scheduled for 10:00 am in the Green Chamber, House of Representatives Building, National Assembly Complex, Abuja, will be attended by dignitaries including the Vice President, Deputy President of the Senate, Deputy Speaker of the House, and other notable guests.

Highlights of the event include commemorative lectures on the theme “25 Years of the National Assembly: Lessons & Opportunities” by Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, CFR (Speaker, 9th House of Representatives); Senator (Dr.) David A.B. Mark, GCON (President of the 6th & 7th Senate); and Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR (Former Head of State).

The new National Assembly Library Complex, named the Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu Building, will be unveiled and commissioned by the President, followed by a tour of the facility.

Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, established on May 29, 1999, has seen six electoral cycles and an alternation of power between political parties, making it the longest period of unbroken legislative practice in the country’s history.

The President of the Senate and Chairman of the National Assembly, H.E. Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, have both emphasized the significance of this Silver Jubilee, highlighting the National Assembly’s pivotal role in safeguarding democracy and its dedication to reflecting on lessons learned and opportunities ahead.

This event is a fitting tribute to Nigeria’s democratic journey and a testament to the resilience and enduring strength of its democratic institutions.
