National Assembly Oversight Enhances Government Transparency, Says Minister of Police Affairs.


In a recent press release from the Ministry of Police Affairs, the Honourable Minister, Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, emphasized the pivotal role of the National Assembly in fostering transparency and accountability within government agencies.

This assertion came during a familiarization visit of the House of Representatives Committee on Police Affairs, chaired by Honourable Abubakar Makki Yalleman, to the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

Gaidam highlighted the significance of the National Assembly’s oversight functions in scrutinizing the activities of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

He underscored that such oversight not only ensures that decisions align with the interests of the Nigerian populace but also fosters public trust in governmental operations.

The Minister elucidated on the ongoing reforms within the Ministry aimed at enhancing the professionalism, efficiency, and accountability of law enforcement agencies.

These initiatives include training programs, community policing implementations, and the integration of modern technology to bolster law enforcement endeavors.

Moreover, Gaidam reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to eradicating corruption and misconduct within the police force.

He pledged to establish robust systems for transparently addressing cases of malpractice and corruption.

During the visit, the Minister disclosed that the Ministry had utilized 95.05% of its approved capital budget for 2023, with allocations directed towards critical projects such as the enhancement of Electronic Data Management Systems (EDMS) and the assessment of police barracks nationwide.

Hajia Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Honourable Minister of State for Police Affairs, echoed Gaidam’s sentiments, emphasizing the Ministry’s focus on a technologically driven police force to tackle security challenges effectively.

She called for support from the National Assembly to consolidate previous reforms and address existing policy, infrastructure, and welfare gaps.

In response, Honourable Abubakar Makki Yalleman, Chairman of the House Committee on Police Affairs, commended the Ministry’s cooperation and pledged legislative support to bridge identified gaps and enhance security measures for Nigerian citizens.

The collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative arms were highlighted as essential for the nation’s well-being, signaling a unified approach towards addressing security challenges and promoting good governance.

The press release concluded with Deputy Director Press, Bolaji O. Kazeem, noting the visit’s significance and showcasing a picture capturing the momentous occasion with the dignitaries present.
