National Assembly Intervenes to Prevent Labour Strike

The National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has stepped in to mediate between the Federal Government and Labour Unions, aiming to avert a nationwide strike scheduled for June 3, 2024.

The strike, announced by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), follows a deadlock over a new national minimum wage and the recent electricity tariff hike. The National Assembly’s leadership, comprising Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio and House Speaker Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, is proactively engaging both parties to find a mutually acceptable solution.

The National Assembly acknowledges the valid reasons behind each party’s stance and is committed to representing the interests of all stakeholders. The Senate and House Committees on Labour, Employment and Productivity, chaired by Senator Diket Plang and Rep. Adegboyega Adefarati, respectively, will engage in constructive dialogue to explore solutions.

“We urge all stakeholders to remain patient and cooperative as we work diligently to find a mutually acceptable resolution in the best interest of the country,” said Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Senate Spokesman, and Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., House Spokesman.
