NANS Lagos Commends Zone 2 AIG Fayoade for Swift Action in Unjust Arrest of LASU Female Student

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Lagos State Chapter, has commended the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 2, Adegoke M. Fayoade, for his swift and transparent intervention in the unjust arrest of a female student of Lagos State University (LASU), following what has been described as a misleading and malicious petition by her landlord.

The incident, which drew widespread attention on social media, involved the forceful arrest of the LASU student on Friday, July 18, 2025, by operatives of Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan. According to NANS, the arrest stemmed from a petition filed by her landlord, who had earlier refused to honour police invitations after the student lodged a formal complaint of harassment and intimidation at the Igando Police Division.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Comrade Abdul-Raheem Abdul-Quadri, and PRO, Comrade Ridwan Ajayi, NANS Lagos described the landlord’s actions as “calculated inaction and a gross abuse of access to law enforcement,” aimed at silencing and punishing the student through unlawful means.

Upon receiving intelligence from the leadership of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), the NANS Lagos Chairman immediately contacted AIG Fayoade, calling for the student’s urgent release. The intervention proved successful, as the student was released on bail by 6:00 am the following day.

Further demonstrating commitment to fairness, AIG Fayoade personally convened a fact-finding meeting on Monday, July 21. The session, attended by the landlord, the student and her parents, LASUSU representatives, senior police officers, and a NANS Lagos delegate, resulted in the case being transferred to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police for further impartial investigation.

“NANS Lagos is proud of the proactive, student-sensitive, and fatherly leadership shown by AIG Adegoke M. Fayoade,” the statement read. “His actions not only helped avert a prolonged injustice but also reinforced public confidence in the police as a force for justice and protection.”

The student body also commended the LASU Students’ Union for its unwavering advocacy and solidarity in the face of abuse, emphasizing the importance of collaborative vigilance in the defense of students’ rights.

In a strong warning to landlords, caretakers, and others, NANS Lagos declared that Nigerian students will not tolerate oppression or intimidation in any form. The association also urged the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the landlord’s motives thoroughly and treat the filing of false or malicious petitions as a criminal offence.

“As we await the outcome of further investigations, our message is clear—justice must be done, and no one is above the law,” the statement concluded.

End.
