NAF Denies Involvement in Buguma Wellhead Explosion

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has refuted allegations suggesting its involvement in the recent explosion at an NNPC wellhead in Buguma Community, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

In a statement issued on January 20, 2025, Air Vice Marshal Olusola F. Akinboyewa, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, described the reports as “misleading” and “unfounded,” calling on media outlets to verify information before publication.

According to the NAF, video evidence from its high-definition surveillance platform confirms that the wellhead had been leaking crude oil for an extended period due to illegal activities, such as oil bunkering, in the area.

The footage, including recordings from December 2024, reportedly showed the wellhead leaking and a barge already burnt before the arrival of NAF personnel.

The NAF emphasized that its onboard camera systems document all operations, ensuring transparency and accountability.

The service dismissed allegations of indiscriminate firing or destruction of civilian infrastructure as baseless.

“The NAF ensures due diligence before engaging any target, focusing solely on illegal refining sites and equipment while prioritizing the safety of civilians and critical infrastructure,” the statement read.

The Air Force reiterated its commitment to combating crude oil theft and safeguarding national assets, assuring the public of its professionalism and respect for human life.

NAF urged Nigerians to disregard speculative reports and reaffirmed its dedication to its mission of protecting the nation’s resources.
